Week of October 7, 1962

Rosslyn, Virginia

Vanessa could contain her curiosity no longer. If Charlie’s materials were as dangerous as he had hinted, she had a right to know what they contained.

Taking the materials to the sofa in her living room, she slit open the two sealed packets. The contents were identical. Each one contained four smaller sealed envelopes that were labeled Photos, Documentation, Supporting materials, and Narrative. A short note explained that the first three envelopes provided supporting evidence for the truth of the narrative.

In the Photos envelope, she found pictures of a rifle, the Lincoln Memorial, a young man on a blue Vespa motor scooter on the other side of the Lincoln Memorial, a SANE peace activist passing out leaflets by the reflecting pool, and Charlie himself holding a guitar as he sat on the ledge of the reflecting pool with the Washington Monument over his shoulder in the background. She couldn’t see how any of the photos would be evidence of anything in his favor.

The second envelope contained a set of army orders reassigning Charlie to temporary duty to a unit in Northern Virginia, which an accompanying note identified as a CIA outfit headed by Charlie’s recruiter, Walter Bishop. A second paper, signed by both Charlie and Bishop, promised that Bishop would intervene to get him an early discharge and set him up with a Wall Street firm as a portfolio manager.

Vanessa whistled. This was Charlie’s dream job, the one thing he talked about more than any other, and he would be good at it. The stock tips he had given her had outperformed the widow and orphan stocks in the professionally managed trust fund set up for her by her father.

The third envelope contained bits of memorabilia with no inherent meaning to her. They were things he had held onto, said a note, in case he ever needed evidence that would support the claims in his narrative statement. They included a SANE leaflet apparently handed out by the activist at the reflecting pool, a page torn from the phone book of the Marine Corps Base Quantico with a date penciled in, a page from a CIA document about somebody named Marita, again with a date penciled in, and a page from a memo pad with the title “From the desk of Bill Harvey.” Two typewritten notes described documents he claimed to have been shown by Bill Harvey while in Harvey’s CIA office. The first described a White House order dated November 3, 1961, that established the special group augmented to oversee the Operation Mongoose plot to overthrow Fidel Castro. The second described an agenda for an August 14, 1962 Operation Mongoose meeting that, Charlie claimed, named Bill Harvey as responsible for the CIA plot to assassinate Castro.

That Charlie could remember all these details did not surprise Vanessa. Over and over, he had shown an ability to recall precise details. She had always admired the deviousness she had seen in him. She had the same trait, herself. But
